Who is your real opponent?

Who is your real opponent?

Most people assume that the martial arts are about fighting, and they are absolutely right! But who are we really fighting against?

Of course we learn to defend ourselves and we fight against others in competition, but our real opponent is ourselves. When we train in the martial arts we’re really learning to defeat our own limitations, our fears, and our doubts. Every day we step on the mats we’re not trying to be better than the other students, we’re trying to be better than we were the day before.

When we go to a tournament, we aren’t trying to beat the other people in the ring; we’re trying to beat what we’re afraid of so we can become stronger and more confident. We’re trying to beat that little voice inside of us that says “You can’t do that” or “You’re not good enough”.

What makes someone a great martial artist isn’t that they can beat someone in a fight, but that they work hard to become a better person every single day.
