Quality #3 – Timing/Punctuality
In order to become a Martial Arts champion in the ring, one must develop near-perfect timing. During sparring, there is no time to think. Every block and strike must be delivered at the right time to the right place. The smallest error in timing can be the difference between you, or your opponent, landing the winning blow.
Outside of our Martial Arts training, the parallel human quality to timing is punctuality. Always being on time shows that we have respect for our time, as well as the time of others. Being disciplined with our time management also forces us to plan our days better, which allows us to focus on important tasks and can help us to get more done.
As Martial Artists, we must strive to always be punctual in our everyday lives, just as we strive to develop perfect timing with our techniques.
Here are two assignments to help you develop these qualities. First, while training in class, try to focus on improving the timing for your strikes and blocks. Second, outside of class, try to live by the motto “Better to be thirty minutes early than one minute late” And to be on time everywhere you go.
“Punctuality is the politeness of kings.” – King Louis XVIII
